One Night Only: Concert Supporting Youth Choir Program & Musician's Advocacy Group

Four National Touring Acts Return To Chicago To Play Benefit Concert For Chicago Children's Choir, Lawyers for the Creative Arts

CHICAGO, IL – During a time when resources for music and educational programming, and for groups who advocate on behalf of musicians and artists, are dwindling, organizations are struggling to continue providing their services. To help raise much needed funding and awareness to two worthwhile organizations, Sound of Summer showcase comes to the iconic House of Blues in downtown Chicago for one night only – Tuesday July 18, 2017 –  with an evening of genre-spanning performances and a unique music memorabilia raffle.

Sound of Summer has named Chicago Children’s Choir (a world-renowned organization whose choir and music programming currently serves more than 4,6500 Chicago area youth) and Lawyers for the Creative Arts (a Chicago-based organization who provides free legal services to clients in all areas of the arts including visual, music, dance, literary, digital media, and arts education) as this year’s beneficiaries.

“Chicago Children’s Choir works with 4600 children each year in all 57 zip codes of the city of Chicago– bridging the divides of race and class; enriching their lives with a superior music education and providing life-change performance opportunities. All the children we serve participate free of charge or at greatly subsidized rate. We are grateful for the generous support of Chicago’s philanthropic individuals, corporate and foundation community. An investment in Chicago Children’s Choir is an investment in Chicago’s youth and a brighter future.” – Christina Deaton DeMarea (COO of Chicago Children’s Choir)

"For 45 years, Lawyers for the Creative Arts has supported the incredibly diverse Illinois arts community by providing crucial pro bono legal counsel. LCA is a small organization, but with our vast network of hundreds of Chicago’s top lawyers, we are able to serve every corner of our exciting arts community in all facets of the arts—visual art, literary, theatre, music and dance—in most every area of the law.  LCA believes that knowledge about legal issues makes artists and arts groups better able to pursue their work and offers an extensive educational outreach program designed to ensure that those who pursue their artistic passions do so as well-informed business people.  In the words of one of our supporters, 'LCA does all the left-brain work for the right-brain people.'”  –  Jan Feldman (Executive Director of Lawyers for the Creative Arts)

In addition to performances by four emerging bands, concert-goers can participate in a charity raffle for autographed music memorabilia, concert tickets, unique live music experiences, and other items every music lover would be eager to have! A portion of every ticket sale and 100% of the proceeds from the raffle will benefit the Chicago Children's Choir and Lawyers for the Creative Arts.

Each of the performers have strong ties to Chicago’s vibrant music community.  They are:

  • The War on Peace – known for creating music with a lush, ethereal sonic landscape.
  • Antony + the Tramps – described by the Illinois Entertainer as wonderfully orchestrated roots rock for the 21st century.
  • Molehill – combines elements of progressive rock with pop sensibilities along with expansive and emotionally charged lyrics, this band delivers a symphonic listening experience.
  • Mutts – comprised of only keyboards, bass guitar, and drums, this trio has been described by TimeOut Magazine as sounding like “Tom Waits fronting a garage band.”

Links to each of the performers’ websites, music videos, and high-resolution photos are below.

Sound of Summer is organized by attorneys from the Entertainment and Media Law practice of Swanson, Martin, & Bell, LLP. The event is regarded as a premier fundraiser for music and arts non-profit organizations.

About Chicago Children’s Choir

Founded as a single choir in 1956 with a mission to connect voices across the city, Chicago Children’s Choir now serves 4,600 youth who represent all 57 Chicago zip codes. Founder, Reverend Christopher Moore, believed in uniting youth from diverse backgrounds to become global citizens through music. Over the past 60 years, that simple yet powerful mission has grown exponentially, with programs in 80 city schools, 10 neighborhoods, a choir for boys with changing voices and the world-renowned Voice of Chicago. About Lawyers for the Creative Arts

In 1972, a group of young lawyers formed what they called the "Creative City Committee" to determine ways to work more closely with the life of the city. They targeted the artistic community, and created a pro bono art and law organization, Lawyers for the Creative Arts. Its mission: to provide legal assistance to artists and arts organizations financially unable to retain legal counsel. Learn more about Lawyers for the Creative Arts at Law-Arts.org.
